As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.
(Ephesians 4:1-3)
Worth. For such a small word, it holds an extreme amount of weight. In fact, when translated into the original greek, the word is axios, which means weight, assigning a matching value (worth-to worth), and my absolute favorite definition:
as the assessment in keeping with how something “weighs in” on God’s balance –
a scale of truth.
The word worth in the Ephesians 4 verse is indicating that your calling is on a balance of the same equal value or worth to God’s truth.
And God’s truth is the foundation that we place our trust in Him. It is what defines absolute truth, without it, there is no truth on which we can stand.
Do you get the power of understanding your worth? And the immensity then of how important it is for us to live our lives in a way that stays in balance with His truth?
I love how Paul, the author of Ephesians, makes sure we understand exactly what that means for us. He tells us to do that with humility, gentleness, patience, bearing with one another in love, and seeking the Spirit of unity in the bond of peace.
These are words that the world would not suggest us to pursue when it comes to our calling. No, the world tells us to be proud of our own accomplishments, to do what needs to be done regardless of others, to seize the day and get our instant gratification, to be self-seeking. In doing so, we end up causing more division than unity.
But God, His perspective is entirely different. Live a life that is worthy of your calling. Don’t waste another moment.
